Hi All,

Please take note of the following annoucement.

1.Reminder that there will be a compulsory Mock Exam for all @ 8.30am sharp.

LT4 (Remaining classes, ie 09S14-09S30)

The Mock paper will make up of Pure mathematics and Statistics.

Duration of paper is 2.5hr.

You are strongly advised to prepare well for this mock exam so that this can be a checkpoint for yourself (on your preparedness for the Prelim paper and ‘A’ levels).

You are to bring your own MF15 and writing material for the mock exam.

2. Please remember to do your econs past year papers in the midst of your revision.

The date of this expedition is estimated to be between late May (after the end of Term 2) and early June.

The objective of the project is to help in the capacity building of the local community, mainly the children in the villages or in schools.

Please submit your application BY 8 APRIL 2010. 3pm.

Application is open to the students who participated in last year's Metro-SIF-PJC Fundraiser.

Be a Cold Storage Kids Run 2010 Ambassador NOW!

The Cold Storage Kids Run is back for the third year running! This year’s event will see parents motivating and cheering on their young ones as they take to the track for a healthy and active lifestyle.

The only running event tailored for children will also create an excellent opportunity for children looking at engendering a healthier lifestyle. And with parents cheering them on by their side – everyone goes home a winner!

To be held at the F1 Pit Building, Cold Storage Kids Run 2010 will see the debut of the Pram Chase, where excited parents will be walking down the finishing line with their babies!

Last year’s event would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, and we are looking to engage 300 people this year to make this occasion an even better and more memorable one. Being involved as a volunteer is definitely a wonderful way of contributing to the event and doing your part as a Kids Run ambassador. So join us as a volunteer now, and be part of this significant sporting event!

Guidelines for sport and games

Badminton (Mixed)

1. Each badminton game shall comprise 3 matches as follows:

First Singles (Boy)
Second Singles (Girl)
Mixed Doubles

2. Number of players during game = 4 (2 boys and 2 girls)

3. Each team shall comprise a maximum of 6 players (2 reserves, no restriction on gender).

4. All Houses are allowed to send 1 team only.

5. Only 1 member of the school team is allowed to participate in the team.

6. Each game shall be played in the format according to the number of entries received.

7. Each set shall be played to 15 points.

8. The winner of each match shall be determined by the results of one set.

9. The winner of the game shall be determined by the best of 3 matches.

10. Members of the Badminton Team will be deployed as umpires, line judges and officials for the duration of the competition.

11. Games will be played in the hall from 1pm-6pm.

Basketball (Boys)

1. Number of players playing during the game = 5.

2. Each team shall comprise a maximum of 8 players (3 reserves).

3. All Houses are allowed to send 1 team only.

4. Only 2 member of the school team are allowed to participate in the team.

5. Each game shall be played in the format according to the number of entries received.

6. Substitution of players will be made on a rolling basis.

7. Members of the Basketball Team (Boys) will be deployed as umpires and officials for the duration of the competition.

Basketball 3 on 3 (Girls)

1. Number of players playing during the game = 3.

2. Each team shall comprise a maximum of 5 players (2 reserves).

3. All Houses are allowed to send 2 teams.

4. Only 1 member of the school team is allowed to participate per team.

5. Each game shall be played in the format according to the number of entries received.

6. Substitution of players will be made on a rolling basis.

7. Members of the Basketball Team (Girls) will be deployed as umpires and officials for the duration of the competition.

Board Games (Mixed)

1. Each game shall comprise 3 sub-games as follows:

International Chess
Chinese Chess
Reversi/Otello

2. Number of players during the game = 3 (no restriction on gender).

3. Each team shall comprise a maximum of 4 players (1 reserve, no restriction on gender).

4. All Houses are allowed to send 2 teams only.

5. Each game shall be played in the format according to the number of entries received.

6. The winner of the game shall be determined by the best of 3 sub-games.

7. Members of the Chess Club will be deployed as judges and officials for the duration of the competition.

Bowling (Mixed)

1. Each bowler shall have 4 games.

2. Number of players during the game = 4 (2 boys and 2 girls).

3. Each team shall comprise a maximum of 6 players (2 reserves, no restriction on gender).

4. All Houses are allowed to send 2 teams.

5. The winner shall be the team with the highest accumulated score after 4 games from 4 bowlers.

6. Bowlers need to bear the cost of the games.

7. Members of the Ten-Pin Bowling Club will be deployed as judges and officials for the duration of the competition.

Captains Ball (Mixed)

1. Number of players playing during the game = 6 (at least 2 girls at all time).

2. Each team shall comprise a maximum of 9 players (3 reserves, no restriction on gender).

3. All Houses are allowed to send 1 team only.

4. Each game shall be played in the format according to the number of entries received.

5. Substitution of players will be made on a rolling basis.

6. Members of the ODAC Club will be deployed as umpires and officials for the duration of the competition.

Defence of the Ancients (DotA)

1. Number of players during the competition = 5.

2. Each team shall comprise a maximum of 6 players (1 reserve).

3. All Houses are allowed to send 1 team only.

4. Each team shall comprise 5 House members (no restriction on gender).

5. Competition will be played in a single-game. A 'single-game match' is played in one game. The winner of the game is the team that has destroyed the opponent's ancients or if the opposing team forfeits.

6. Members of the IT Club will be deployed as judges and officials for the duration of the competition.

Floorball (Boys)

1. Number of players playing during the game = 5.

2. Each team shall comprise a maximum of 8 players (3 reserves).

3. 3 reserves.

4. All Houses are allowed to send 1 team only.

5. Each game shall be played in the format according to the number of entries received.

6. Substitution of players will be made on a rolling basis.

7. Members of the Hockey Team (Boys) will be deployed as umpires and officials for the duration of the competition.

Floorball (Girls)

1. Number of players playing during the game = 5.

2. Each team shall comprise a maximum of 8 players (3 reserves).

3. All Houses are allowed to send 1 team only.

4. Each game shall be played in the format according to the number of entries received.

5. Substitution of players will be made on a rolling basis.

6. Members of the Hockey Team (Girls) will be deployed as umpires and officials for the duration of the competition.

4. Each game shall be played in the format according to the number of entries received.

5. The winner of each match shall be determined by the best of 3 sets.

6. The winner of the game shall be determined by the best of 3 matches.

7. Members of the Cuesports Club will be deployed as umpires and officials for the duration of the competition.

Futsal (Boys)

1. Number of players playing during the game = 5.

2. Each team shall comprise a maximum of 8 players (3 reserves).

3. All Houses are allowed to send 1 team only.

4. Each game shall be played in the format according to the number of entries received.

5. Substitution of players will be made on a rolling basis.

6. Members of the Rugby Team will be deployed as umpires and officials for the duration of the competition.

Table Tennis (Mixed)

1. Each table tennis game shall comprise 3 matches as follows:

4. Each game shall be conducted in the format according to the number of entries received.

5. Each team will be ranked in accordance to their performance in the maximum number of consecutive skips accumulated in one attempt within the duration of 60 minutes.

6. Substitution of players will be made on a rolling basis.

7. Members of the Touch Rugby Team will be deployed as judges and officials for the duration of the competition.

Volleyball (Mixed)

1. Number of players playing during the game = 6. At any time during the game, only a maximum of 4 boys may play.

2. Each team shall comprise a maximum of 9 players (3 reserves, no restriction on gender).

3. All Houses are allowed to send 1 team only.

4. Each game shall be played in the format according to the number of entries received.

5. Substitution of players will be made on a rolling basis.

6. Members of the Volleyball Team will be deployed as umpires, line judges and officials for the duration of the competition.

95 new H1N1 cases raise total infected in S'pore to 315

SINGAPORE: The H1N1 virus continues its spread in Singapore.

The Health Ministry confirmed 95 new cases on Thursday, raising the total infected to 315.

About half of the new cases have been investigated and they comprise 25 local infections and 22 imported ones.

Of the 25 new local infections, 10 are Butter Factory nightspot patrons and staff, four are from the Maju Camp cluster and two caught the virus from close contact with imported cases.

Nine are linked to a new Republic Polytechnic cluster, which had three previous cases.

The remaining 48 new cases are still being investigated.

Meanwhile, a trainee working in MediaCorp who contracted the H1N1 virus has been cleared and discharged from hospital.

The Health Ministry says those who develop flu symptoms and have a recent travel history to affect countries should call 993 for an ambulance and should avoid taking public transport.

Those who have symptoms but no travel history should put on a mask, visit a general practitioner and avoid crowded areas.

A new fresh sheet of travel declaration form (TDF) together with Education Package on H1N1 has been snail mail to you. Please complete the TDF and submit it to the school by 1st July 2009 (Wed)*,preferbly monday 29 June.
Please go to the e-learning portal and update your profile i.e. your e-mail and contact details. Please also inform me if you have changed your contact number recently as i need to update the relay system.
As at 23 Jun 2009,4:10pm, Schools will re-open as scheduled despite H1N1 situation.
Please remember to bring your thermometer and tempreture log on monday, as daily twice tempreture taking exercise will resume on Monday

The Education Ministry said it will issue a seven-day leave of absence (LOA) to all school staff and students returning from affected countries on, or after June 22.
After your return to Singapore from countries with sustained community transmission
Pay close attention to your health for 7 days, watching out for symptoms such as :
• High fever (> 38 deg C)• Sore throat• Cough• Body aches• Runny nose• Headaches• Tiredness
If you have any such symptoms, you should call 993 promptly for an ambulance. You should avoid taking public transport or taxi to minimise exposure. To help in contact tracing, the public may find it helpful to keep records of their movements for 7 days (for example by keeping taxi receipts) after their return.
On 22 June, Singapore has confirmed another 26 new cases (143rd to 168th cases) of Influenza A (H1N1-2009) comprising 17 local cases and 9 cases with travel history. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in Singapore to 168.

Precautionary Measures to Cope With Influenza A (H1N1) When School Reopens
Schools will re-open on Monday, 29 June 2009, as scheduled. To slow down the spread of the H1N1 virus in the school community and in Singapore when school re-opens, MOE will issue a 7-day Leave of Absence (LOA) to all school staff and students returning from affected countries , on and after 22 June 2009, to stay away from school. There will also be stepped up precautionary measures and public education efforts in schools.

Implementation of Leave of Absence (LOA)
Schools will communicate with all parents via multiple channels to obtain the updated travel history of their children, inform them of the implementation of LOA, and update them on any new advisories given out by MOH. The multiple channels include phone calls, emails, postal letters and notices on school websites.

Schools will remind all school staff and students to exercise social responsibility to declare their travel history if they have been to affected countries and to stay at home for 7 days before returning to schools.

Continuity in Learning for Students on LOA
For students who are issued LOA, schools will provide Home-Based Learning (HBL) lessons to them, based on what the rest of their classmates are learning in school. Schools will deliver the materials for HBL and monitor the students’ progress through various channels, such as mail, telephone, hand delivery, email and the school’s learning management system. Schools will also keep parents informed of the learning activities and accompanying study schedule. This will allow parents to play a complementary role by helping to monitor their children’s progress in following the lessons prepared by the teachers. When these students return to school, teachers may also conduct make-up lessons to ensure they catch up with their classmates.

Extra attention will be paid to graduating cohorts of students. Schools will conduct make-up classes and remedial lessons to help them catch up with their studies, and to prepare them adequately for the national examinations.

Additional Precautionary Measures
When school re-opens on 29 June, schools will implement a number of precautionary measures. There will be several layers of checks. This includes setting up stations at the school gates to screen students and staff who are entering the school premises. At the screening stations, those who have returned from affected countries on and after 22 Jun but who may have missed the earlier notifications, will be served LOA and asked to go home. Those who are unwell will be also advised to go home. In the first hour, class teachers will conduct a temperature taking exercise and students will be asked to submit their declaration forms. Students who register a fever, or who have travelled to affected countries, will be immediately moved to another room. Those who are unwell and have travelled recently to affected countries will be isolated and taken by ambulance for medical treatment via 993. The school will inform the parents of other unwell students so that they can bring them to see a doctor and seek their cooperation to exercise social responsibility and ensure that their children are well before returning to school.

Schools will institute twice daily temperature taking, and closely monitor students. In addition, school assemblies will be suspended and CCAs scaled down during the first week after school reopens in order to minimise congregation of school staff and students. Recess will also be staggered. Schools will continue to keep their premises clean and remind their staff and students to maintain high standards of personal hygiene. There will also be tighter school security. All visitors will also be screened for travel history and temperature taking before they enter school premises.

Cooperation by Parents
MOE seeks the cooperation of parents to safeguard the health of their child and all students. Parents are requested to:

Inform their child’s class teacher if their child has returned from an affected country on or after 22 Jun and not send their child to school for 7 days from the date of their return to Singapore;

Complete the travel declaration form that will be sent to them before school opens and ask their child to submit it to their teacher on the first day of return to school. As there will be no assembly for the first week, students should report to their form classes; and

Exercise social responsibility by ensuring that their child does not go to school, but stays at home and sees the doctor if he/she is unwell.

School and Public Education
To support schools in their effort to educate students in maintaining high standards of personal hygiene and practise social responsibility, MOE has developed an Education Package on H1N1 for students of all levels.

All schools will receive the Education Package before school reopening. The package includes a set of slides for teachers to use in educating and advising their students, posters to be displayed at strategic locations within the school to raise student awareness, as well as pamphlets for students to bring home and share with their parents. The pamphlets will include messages on good hygiene practices and social responsibility, for example on how students on LOA should stay at home to monitor their health condition and not congregate at public places.

Schools will dedicate time on the first day of school for teachers to help students gain a better understanding of H1N1 and the situation in Singapore. Teachers will use the materials to educate their students and communicate to them the importance of their role in helping to slow down the spread of H1N1.

Close Monitoring of Dynamic Situation
MOE is in close consultation with MOH and will activate appropriate measures should there be a need to. Parents and students can check the MOE website for more details. They can also contact MOE Customer Service Centre at 6872-2220 or call their child’s school if they have any query

Singapore confirms 6 more H1N1 flu cases, bringing total to 40

Health screening officers monitor passengers through a thermal scanner at the Changi International Airport

SINGAPORE: Singapore has confirmed another six cases of the H1N1 flu, bringing the total to 40.

Three of them are children, aged seven to nine.

One of them, a nine-year-old Malaysian boy, had gone to Sydney and Melbourne before coming here for a holiday.

He had developed symptoms while onboard a Jetstar flight (JQ61) from Melbourne (via Darwin) on June 13. He was seated at row 17.

Another child, a seven-year-old girl from Australia, also flew in from Melbourne on Saturday, on Singapore Airlines SQ228, row 60, at 21:32.

The third child, an eight-year-old Singapore permanent resident, had gone to the Philippines for a family visit on May 30, and returned on Saturday. Her mother, who was with her, has also been admitted.

Both had boarded Singapore Airlines flight SQ915 and were seated at row 38 and 39 on June 13. The mother had developed symptoms before boarding, while the girl became ill during the flight. All four cases were picked up by airport thermal scanners and sent to the Communicable Disease Centre on 993 ambulances.

The fifth case is a 24-year-old Singaporean off-duty air stewardess who had flown in from Frankfurt on Singapore Airlines SQ25, row 38, on June 12.

She had developed symptoms while in Frankfurt, but was given the all-clear to fly by a German doctor. Upon arrival in Singapore, she went to a clinic at Changi Airport and was sent to the Communicable Disease Centre via 993 ambulance on the morning of June 14.

The final case is a 19-year-old Singaporean man, returning from the holiday in Melbourne on June 12.

He had arrived in Melbourne on June 7 and developed symptoms the next day. Upon return to Singapore on SQ238, row 43, he was not detected by airport thermal scanners as he was not feverish then and stayed at home. He was later sent to CDC via 993 ambulance on the night of June 12

Of the 40 cases so far, 19 had travelled to Melbourne, and another 14 had come from the US.

The Health Ministry (MOH) has initiated contact tracing for all six patients.

MOH reminds travellers to refrain from travelling should they have symptoms within 24 hours of their planned departure and to consult a doctor.

JC1 Mid Year Examination consists of two papers.

Paper 1 Multiple Choice (20 Marks) Duration: 35 minutes
Section A: 15 direct choice questions
Section B: 5 multiple completion questions

Paper 2 Structured and Free Response (60 marks) Duration: 1 hour 40 minutes
Section A: 4 structured questions including a planning component
For the planning component, candidates will be asked to provide experimental details to carry out one of the following: acid-base titration, redox titration, gravimetric analysis, gas collection experiment or chemical energetics experiment.
Section B: 2 free response questions

About 40% of the questions in Mid Year Examination are taken from Ten Year Series (2008 Edition). You are highly encouraged to do the questions and seek clarification with your tutor when in doubt.

SINGAPORE: Singapore's non-oil domestic exports (NODX) fell by an expected 19.2 per cent on-year on lower demand for electronic and non-electronic exports in April.

This was the 12th consecutive month of contractions following a 17 per cent on-year decrease in March.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, NODX fell by 1.3 per cent on-month in April, compared to a 10 per cent increase in March.

Data from the International Enterprise Singapore showed that electronic exports shrank by 26 per cent last month from a year earlier, identical to the decline in March.

This was largely due to lower domestic exports of computer parts, integrated circuits and disk drives.

Meanwhile, shipments of non-electronic products fell 15 per cent as a result of reduced exports of petrochemicals, pumps and disk media products.

Exports to the top 10 export markets also decreased in April. IE Singapore said the largest contributors to the contraction were the European Union, the United States and Indonesia.

The government has lowered its external trade forecast for this year to between -13 and -10 per cent – down from an earlier projection of between -11 and -9 per cent.

All the measures taken in Alert Yellow will continue where operationally feasible.

Inefficient human-to-human transmissions of flu caused by a novel virus, requiring close and sustained contact to an index case. Further spread can be prevented through public health measures to isolate cases and quarantine contacts.
Risk of import into Singapore elevated. Isolated imported cases may occur but there is no sustained transmission.

Strategy is to prevent further import of cases, and to ring fence and isolate cases to prevent spread. The focus will be to provide treatment of all cases, and antiviral prophylaxis to contacts including exposed healthcare workers.

10 May 2009 -- As of 07:30 GMT, 10 May 2009, 29 countries have officially reported 4379 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection.

Mexico has reported 1626 laboratory confirmed human cases of infection, including 45 deaths. The United States has reported 2254 laboratory confirmed human cases, including two deaths. Canada has reported 280 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death. Costa Rica has reported eight laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death.

The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths - Argentina (1), Australia (1), Austria (1), Brazil (6), China, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (1), Colombia (1), Denmark (1), El Salvador (2), France (12), Germany (11), Guatemala (1), Ireland (1), Israel (7), Italy (9), Japan (4), Netherlands (3), New Zealand (7), Panama (3), Poland (1), Portugal (1), Republic of Korea (3), Spain (93), Sweden (1), Switzerland (1) and the United Kingdom (39).
